RoukenBio and AVS Bio Form Partnership to Combine Antibody Discovery and Functional Characterization

RoukenBio and AVS Bio have entered into a strategic partnership to integrate antibody discovery and optimization with early, mechanism-based functional analysis. The collaboration aims to streamline the development of therapeutic antibodies by linking design-focused discovery with physiologically relevant translational assays.

The initiative combines AVS Bio’s antibody discovery platforms with RoukenBio’s expertise in functional characterization using cell-based and primary immune cell models. Together, the companies plan to offer an end-to-end approach that enables early confirmation of a candidate’s mechanism of action (MoA) and reduces the risk of failure during investigational new drug (IND) preparation.

AVS Bio’s capabilities include design-driven antibody discovery using single B cell, phage display, hybridoma, and rare hit magnification technologies. Its platform integrates in silico–based optimization to refine antibody selection for developability and clinical suitability. RoukenBio complements these services by providing detailed functional assays to assess candidate activity in biologically relevant systems, particularly in immune-mediated disease areas such as immuno-oncology, autoimmunity, allergy, and inflammation.

By aligning discovery with early functional assessment, the partnership seeks to generate more predictive data on pathway modulation and cellular effects, improving candidate selection before preclinical development. According to both companies, bringing functional insights into earlier stages of drug development could help mitigate common causes of late-stage clinical failure linked to insufficient mechanistic understanding.

RoukenBio’s Chief Business Officer Adele Hannigan said the collaboration addresses a core challenge in antibody development: the need for stronger mechanistic validation before advancing candidates to IND-enabling studies. Ilse Roodink, Chief Scientific Officer at AVS Bio, noted that combining diversity-driven discovery with functional profiling enhances data-based decision-making throughout the antibody development process.

The companies stated that the partnership reflects a shared goal of establishing a more predictive and integrated pathway from early antibody discovery to clinical readiness.
