Hovione has opened a 31,000-square-foot facility at its East Windsor, New Jersey, campus, adding two commercial-scale spray dryers and doubling the company’s U.S. spray-drying capacity.
The facility, known as 89 Twin Rivers, includes two GMP-ready PSD-3 spray dryers. It operates under the campus’s existing FDA registration and quality system.
The expansion adds manufacturing capacity for spray-dried amorphous solid dispersions, which are used to address poor aqueous solubility in small-molecule drug candidates. Hovione said the expanded site supports its operations from drug substance through spray drying and drug-product manufacturing.
The company said approximately 70% of small-molecule drug candidates have poor aqueous solubility. Its spray-drying platform is used to convert poorly soluble drug ingredients into more bioavailable forms through amorphous solid dispersions.
The opening completes Hovione’s current $100 million investment cycle in New Jersey. The new facility is expected to employ about 80 people.
Hovione said its East Windsor campus will continue to expand over the next five to 10 years. The company plans to develop about 15 acres of adjacent property into a 125,000-square-foot manufacturing facility with additional laboratories, commercial-scale spray-drying capacity and drug-product manufacturing.
The company said customers may co-invest in the planned expansion. It did not provide a timeline for construction, the cost of the proposed next phase or details on customer commitments.
Hovione said the new site is part of its network of development and manufacturing operations in North America, Europe and Asia. The company also cited recent investments in Portugal and Ireland as part of its manufacturing expansion.
