Piramal Pharma Solutions is installing a 4.3-MWp ground-mounted solar power plant at its integrated drug-substance and drug-product facility in Morpeth, United Kingdom.
Operations are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. The project is being delivered through a power-purchase agreement with Alight UK BTM1 Limited.
The installation will include about 6,200 solar panels across 16 acres of land. Once operational, it is expected to supply approximately 3,950 MWh of renewable electricity annually to the Morpeth facility through a behind-the-meter arrangement.
Piramal said the plant is expected to meet about 22% of the site’s annual electricity demand.
The company estimates that the project will avoid about 20,000 metric tons of carbon-dioxide equivalent emissions over 25 years.
Piramal Pharma Solutions is part of Piramal Pharma Ltd. The company said the Morpeth project supports its objective to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse-gas emissions by 42% by fiscal year 2030.
Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from a company’s operations, while Scope 2 emissions result from purchased electricity and other forms of energy. The solar plant will provide electricity directly to the Morpeth facility rather than through the general power grid.
The company said the project is part of its decarbonization plans and will provide onsite electricity generation at the facility.
Frank Bugg, senior vice president of U.K. and Europe operations and managing director of Piramal Pharma Solutions, said the company is working with Alight on the solar project.
