Ontario is providing C$1.75 million through its Life Sciences Scale-Up Fund to support upgrades at Piramal Pharma Solutions’ drug substance facility in Aurora. Piramal plans to invest C$5.31 million in the site project.
The work will update facility infrastructure and support research, development and clinical production of active pharmaceutical ingredients, or APIs. Piramal said the upgrades are also intended to support commercial supply of drug substances and projects related to sustainability and operational efficiency.
The project is expected to create 12 jobs and preserve 183 existing positions at the Aurora facility. Piramal Pharma Solutions, part of Piramal Pharma, provides contract development and manufacturing services to pharmaceutical companies.
Peter DeYoung, CEO of Piramal Global Pharma, said the funding will support modernization of the site and its manufacturing capabilities. Ontario officials described the award as part of the province’s effort to expand local life sciences production and help companies bring health technologies to market.
The provincial funding comes from the Life Sciences Scale-Up Fund, launched in 2024 with C$24 million. Ontario’s 2026 budget added another C$24 million to the program, which supports companies developing and commercializing health technologies.
For Piramal, the Aurora project will focus on drug substance operations, including work on APIs used in medicine development and manufacturing. The company said improvements to the facility will help it serve customers requiring clinical materials as well as commercial supply.
The Ontario contribution and Piramal’s planned spending together amount to about C$7.07 million for the site project. The announcement identifies infrastructure upgrades as the focus of the investment.
