SPI Pharma and Colorcon have formed a global partnership to distribute and develop oral solid-dose products. Under the agreement, Colorcon will serve as SPI Pharma’s distribution and innovation partner for its drug delivery systems portfolio.
The arrangement covers SPI Pharma products used in dosage forms such as chewable tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, powders, sachets and stick packs. Products named in the agreement include Pharmaburst, UltraBurst, Compressol SM, Advantol 300, Pharmasperse 416 and S-Tab.
SPI Pharma supplies pharmaceutical excipients, antacid active ingredients and drug delivery technologies. Colorcon provides film coatings, excipients, modified-release technologies and controlled-atmosphere packaging for pharmaceutical products. The partnership pairs SPI Pharma’s portfolio with Colorcon’s formulation expertise and international customer network.
The companies said they will provide technical support and customer training related to the products. They also plan joint business development work and will identify opportunities to develop additional applications.
Oral solid-dose formulation can involve decisions about how a medicine is manufactured and taken by patients. The products in SPI Pharma’s portfolio are intended for use in several formats, including tablets designed to be chewed or to break down in the mouth.
SPI Pharma Chief Executive Freek Snieders said the agreement will broaden access to the company’s drug delivery systems. Colorcon Chief Executive Simon Tasker said the companies will combine their technical and commercial capabilities to support customers from product development through commercialization.
The partnership gives Colorcon a distribution role across SPI Pharma’s listed drug delivery systems and establishes a framework for the two companies to work together on formulation support and future product development.
