Curia Plans $28 Million Sterile API Expansion

Curia plans to invest $28 million to expand sterile active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing at its Valladolid, Spain, facility. The project will cover steroid and non-steroid products and is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2028.

The expansion will support production for injectable suspensions and other complex sterile formulations. It builds on the site’s capabilities in sterility assurance and solid-state engineering, including aseptic crystallization, milling and micronization.

Closed systems equipped with barrier isolators will provide containment during sterile API handling. Integrated service panels are intended to limit operator interaction with the manufacturing process.

Curia said the expanded operations will accommodate production scales ranging from grams to metric tons. The facility will also offer customizable aseptic packaging configurations intended to maintain sterility and reduce handling steps and contamination risks during transfer and storage.

Scott Wagner, president of Curia’s API business, said the investment would expand the Valladolid site’s ability to manufacture variable batch sizes and support customers from development through commercial production.

The project follows a separate $4 million upgrade to the site’s API aseptic suites, completed in May. That work added to Valladolid’s research and development, analytical and manufacturing services.

Curia is a contract research, development and manufacturing organization with more than 20 sites and over 3,000 employees worldwide. Its services span small molecules, generic APIs and biologics, alongside regulatory support, analytical testing, drug substance manufacturing and sterile fill-finish work.

The company was founded in 1991 as Albany Molecular Research Inc., or AMRI, before expanding through acquisitions.
