Terumo has launched its K-Pack Embrace active safety needle globally, introducing a device designed for automated packaging alongside injectable medicines and syringes. The needle includes a hinged safety shield and a rigid cap-and-case container.
The Tokyo-based company said the hard-shell packaging is intended to protect the needle during co-packing, storage and handling until use. Automated co-packing places a selected injection needle together with a drug product and syringe, requiring packaging that maintains sterility and needle performance throughout the product’s shelf life.
The 25-gauge needle is available in two lengths: 1 inch, or 25 millimeters, and five-eighths of an inch, or 16 millimeters. It is intended for subcutaneous, intramuscular and intravenous applications.
The device is compatible with all male connectors meeting the ISO 80369-7 standard. Its color-coded, tamper-evident label carries a two-dimensional barcode serving as a unique device identification carrier and supporting automated visual inspection during packaging.
An integrated hinged shield can be activated with one hand after use. The mechanism provides audible, visual and tactile confirmation that the shield has engaged. Terumo said the feature is designed to reduce the risk of needlestick injuries.
The needle incorporates Terumo’s T-Sharp technology and forms part of the company’s Pharmaceutical Solutions Division portfolio of injection devices and drug-delivery products.
The division also supplies syringes, infusion sets and prefillable syringes, and provides contract development and manufacturing services, including sterile filling of injectable medicines into polymer prefillable syringes and glass vials. Founded in 1921, Terumo operates in more than 160 countries and regions worldwide.
