Made Scientific, CARR Partner on Cell-Therapy Manufacturing

Made Scientific and CARR Biosystems have formed a partnership to install single-use centrifugation systems at two U.S. facilities, supporting manufacturing processes for mesenchymal stem cells and feeder cells used in allogeneic cell therapy programs.

Under the agreement announced October 26, Made Scientific will deploy multiple CARR UniFuge systems at its Princeton, New Jersey, and East Norriton, Pennsylvania, sites. The equipment will handle cell harvesting, washing and concentration alongside the company’s three-dimensional bioreactor platforms.

Made Scientific is equipping the East Norriton facility with bioreactors capable of handling volumes up to 200 liters. UniFuge will provide a closed, automated separation step for those manufacturing processes.

The platform uses low-shear tubular bowl centrifugation for cell concentration, washing, media exchange, harvesting and formulation. Its single-use systems cover processing volumes ranging from milliliters to more than 2,000 liters.

Made Scientific plans to incorporate the equipment into its existing process development and good manufacturing practice workflows. The companies said using the same separation technology at different scales would support the transition from development to larger-volume production.

The partnership also includes joint development studies using CARR’s benchtop UFMini system. Made Scientific will become a preferred contract development and manufacturing organization for CARR customers evaluating the technology.

Made Scientific established its mesenchymal stem cell and extracellular vesicle services through a partnership with RoosterBio, which has also incorporated UniFuge into its process development capabilities.

The companies intend to use that shared technology to transfer sponsor programs from RoosterBio’s development processes into Made Scientific’s manufacturing operations as those programs advance through development.
