Looking Back – And Looking Forward

I knew I shouldn’t look – but I did – and no, I’m not referring to the browsing history for my Amazon Prime account to see what my family might be getting me for the holidays.

Looking for some inspiration for this last of the year column, I took a look back at what I wrote a year ago.

Aside from the cringey “May You Live in Interesting Times” quote and explanation – it was a pretty bleak note.

If you don’t have a copy of the Q4 2020 issue of Pharmaceutical Outsourcing within easy reach to re-read my thought-provoking end-of-the-year message, I’ll give you the tl:dr(too long:didn’t read) summary.

Basically, I said that 2020 was a whopper of a year (for many reasons) and I hoped that 2021 would be an “uninteresting” year.

Looking at what I wrote last year – I probably could just cut and paste it into this issue – and no one would be the wiser.

But “things” are better this year – aren’t they? I mean if you look past the politics, the environmental issues, the shortages, and the general divide of the population there is reason to be optimistic – isn’t there?

Last year, we had our fingers crossed that the various vaccines in late-stage trials would be approved. Today we have several highly effective vaccines available, and recently their use has been expanded to children ages 5–11. There are also several highly promising COVID-19 treatments in development – more good news!

And – despite supply chain problems that are plaguing many industries – the pharma industry has ramped up vaccine production to such an extent that getting a jab is as easy as walking in to your local pharmacy.

So – looking forward – I’m hoping 2022 will be better than 2021.

As long as we can settle on a new host for Jeopardy!
